Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has issued a fresh warning against Peter Elwelu, declaring that the former senior military officer will “pay in full” for what he described as betraying “God’s Army”.
In a series of posts on X, Muhoozi maintained a hardline position on Elwelu, whose arrest in Soroti City was announced by the UPDF on allegations of involvement in subversive activities and plans to destabilise the Teso sub-region.
“As for Elweru, he will pay in full for betraying God’s Army,” Muhoozi posted, using the name Elweru in reference to the retired general.
The CDF also warned politicians against interfering in military and security matters, saying such involvement would have no effect and could expose those concerned to what he described as “catastrophic problems”.
“I have warned politicians in the past from even thinking of interfering in military/security matters. First of all, it will have absolutely no effect. None. Secondly, it will bring catastrophic problems on those politicians themselves,” he wrote.
The remarks appear to signal Muhoozi’s determination to keep the matter within the security establishment, amid growing public and political interest in Elwelu’s arrest and the allegations against him.
Muhoozi, however, made a distinction between Elwelu and State Minister for Works and former Teso political leader Musa Ecweru, whom he praised as a fearless and courageous figure.
“I consider Hon. Musa Ecweru a fearless man and hero. I have always admired him. Ever since 2003. We shall reward him,” he posted.
In the same latest round of posts, Muhoozi also linked the planned withdrawal of Ugandan troops from Somalia to a renewed focus on the Gaza mission, stating: “As we withdraw all our troops from Somalia. We shall focus more on the Gaza mission.”
