Former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among has become the subject of online speculation after her prominent X account, formerly known as Twitter, appeared to undergo an unexplained change, raising questions about the status and control of the account.
The account, which previously operated under the handle @AnitahAmong, appeared to have been renamed @GlobalAfricaHQ, with her earlier posts no longer visible. The development has triggered speculation that the account may have been compromised, although there has been no official confirmation establishing whether it was hijacked.
As of Sunday morning, attempts to access the profile reportedly returned an “Unable to load” message, leaving users uncertain about the account’s status.
Among had used the platform to communicate parliamentary updates, issue public statements and engage with her constituents and other members of the public. Her account had built a substantial following, with an earlier search listing showing more than 613,000 followers.
The profile was identified as belonging to the Speaker of Uganda’s 11th Parliament and Bukedea District Woman Member of Parliament. It also indicated that the account joined the platform in November 2020.
The apparent changes have attracted mixed reactions from social media users. Former Member of Parliament Barnabas Tinkasiimire welcomed the prospect of Among starting a new page, adding to the online conversation surrounding the development.
However, the circumstances surrounding the apparent change of handle, disappearance of previous posts and current accessibility problems remain unclear. It is also not yet established whether the changes resulted from unauthorised access, a deliberate rebranding, deactivation or a technical issue.
Meanwhile, Among’s Instagram account remains active. Her last post on the platform was reportedly published on May 12, when she congratulated President Yoweri Museveni on his inauguration.
The apparent disruption to her X presence comes as users continue to seek clarity on whether the account remains under her control.
Until Among or her representatives issue a statement, claims that the account has been hijacked remain unverified.
