At least seven people have been killed and 11 others injured after an intercity bus crashed into a stationary articulated lorry on a motorway in southeastern Turkey, officials have confirmed.

The deadly collision occurred approximately 90 kilometres west of Gaziantep, when the coach ploughed into the back of the truck, which had reportedly stopped on the roadside after suffering a tyre blowout. The impact left the front right section of the bus completely destroyed, according to footage circulated from the scene.

All of the victims—both the deceased and the injured—were passengers on the bus, the Gaziantep governor’s office said in a statement quoted by state media agency Anadolu. Authorities said efforts were underway to identify the casualties.

Emergency services rushed to the highway, closing the road as police detained the lorry driver for questioning. Images from the crash site showed the bus twisted and mangled, with its front cabin crushed beneath the rear of the container truck.

This latest tragedy comes amid a series of deadly bus accidents in the region and across Asia.

Just last year, 10 people died and 39 were injured when a passenger coach skidded during rainy conditions and collided with multiple vehicles on a busy Turkish motorway, causing a massive pile-up. Rescue crews, including police, ambulances and fire brigades, responded urgently to save trapped passengers.

Similar fatal bus incidents have also been reported recently in India. In Uttarakhand’s Tehri district, five tourists were killed when a bus carrying 28 passengers veered off the road and plunged 230 feet into a gorge along the Kunjapuri–Hindolakhal route. The crash triggered a frantic rescue effort coordinated by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF).

And just last month in Andhra Pradesh, at least 25 people were killed when a speeding bus collided with a motorbike and burst into flames. Many passengers, who were sleeping at the time, became trapped as the fire swept through the vehicle within minutes.

Authorities in Turkey say investigations into Sunday’s fatal crash are ongoing as they work to determine the full circumstances leading up to the collision.
