All 14 people on board a small passenger aircraft are feared dead after a tragic crash on the outskirts of Juba, South Sudan’s capital, aviation authorities confirmed on Monday.
The ill-fated aircraft, identified as a Cessna 208 Caravan operated by CityLink Aviation, went down approximately 20 kilometers outside the city while en route from Yei to Juba International Airport.
According to the South Sudan Civil Aviation Authority, the plane lost communication with air traffic control shortly before the crash. Preliminary findings suggest that adverse weather conditions, including poor visibility, may have played a role in the accident.
“All 13 passengers and the pilot on board the aircraft are believed to have perished,” the authority said in a statement, adding that investigations are still ongoing to establish the exact cause of the crash.
Among the victims were two Kenyan nationals, while the remaining passengers were South Sudanese.
Emergency response teams were immediately dispatched to the crash site, which is located in a hilly area outside Juba. Authorities say efforts are underway to secure the area, recover remains, and gather critical evidence for the investigation.
Videos circulating on social media showed burning wreckage scattered across a mist-covered landscape, underscoring the severity of the crash.
The Civil Aviation Authority has pledged to provide further updates as more details emerge, while also working closely with rescue teams and investigators on the ground.
The crash marks another tragic incident in the region’s aviation sector, where weather challenges and infrastructure limitations continue to pose risks to air travel.
