The Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) has officially withdrawn its earlier endorsement of Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among and Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa for the positions of Speaker and Deputy Speaker of Uganda’s 12th Parliament, signaling a major political recalibration within the influential pressure group led by Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

In a press statement dated May 12, 2026, and signed by PLU General Secretary David Kabanda, the organization announced that the endorsement letter issued on March 11, 2026, had been “retracted and withdrawn with immediate effect.” The earlier communication had directed PLU members to support Among and Tayebwa for the top parliamentary positions. However, the latest directive now urges all PLU Members of Parliament-elect to instead rally behind candidates that will officially be presented by President Yoweri Museveni.

The development underscores PLU’s renewed emphasis on aligning fully with the guidance of its chairman, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, and the broader direction of the ruling establishment ahead of the highly anticipated leadership elections in the 12th Parliament. “In the PLU, we follow the commands, instructions and guidance of our Chairman Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba at all times,” the statement reads in part.

Political observers say the sudden shift could reshape the dynamics surrounding the race for parliamentary leadership, especially as lobbying intensifies within the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM). The retraction has already sparked debate in political circles, with many interpreting it as a sign of fresh negotiations and possible changes in the power equation ahead of the official endorsement process by the party leadership.

The announcement comes at a time when attention is firmly fixed on the composition and leadership of the incoming Parliament, with both Anita Among and Thomas Tayebwa having been widely viewed as frontrunners for retaining their respective offices.
