An Israeli Air Force helicopter carrying Israeli President Isaac Herzog was forced to make an emergency landing on Thursday after striking a bird during flight, according to a statement from the Israel Defense Forces.

The helicopter safely diverted to Palmachim Airbase, where it landed without incident. No injuries or damage were reported, the military confirmed.

President Herzog had been traveling from a memorial ceremony held at Mount Herzl in Jerusalem, honoring soldiers killed during Operation Protective Edge, and was en route to a shiva visit in northern Israel when the incident occurred.

Following the bird strike, the aircraft was grounded and transferred to Israeli Air Force technical personnel for inspection and maintenance. The Israeli Air Force said the helicopter will be serviced and returned to operational readiness as soon as possible, while the incident remains under review.

A replacement helicopter was quickly dispatched, allowing President Herzog and his crew to continue their schedule shortly after the landing.

The IDF emphasized that operations continued normally following the brief disruption, and that safety procedures were followed throughout the incident.
