Swift Tech: NUP Boss’ X Account Hacked As Party Sounds Alarm

The National Unity Platform (NUP) has raised the alarm after the X account of its Secretary General, David Lewis Rubongoya, was taken over by unknown individuals, leaving the prominent opposition figure unable to control posts made on the platform.

NUP confirmed the incident on Thursday, urging Rubongoya’s more than 439,000 followers to disregard any messages appearing on his account until the party confirms that control has been restored.

The party said it was working to recover the account, but did not disclose how the attackers gained access or identify the individuals behind the takeover.

The warning followed a series of unusual posts that appeared on Rubongoya’s account, openly indicating that the account had been compromised.

One message stated that the account had been taken over and that its owner was no longer in control, while another later claimed that Rubongoya had been locked out.

The incident has placed Rubongoya’s social media platforms under scrutiny because of his prominent role in NUP and his frequent use of X to communicate with supporters and comment on political developments.

Rubongoya has also regularly used the platform to share information concerning NUP activities, arrests and incidents involving party supporters, making the account an important source of political updates for thousands of Ugandans.

With the account still accessible to the public, concerns have emerged that whoever is controlling it could publish statements or other information that may be falsely attributed to Rubongoya.

NUP therefore cautioned the public against treating any new posts from the account as genuine until the party announces that the Secretary General has regained control.

The takeover comes at a time of heightened political activity in Uganda, when social media platforms have become key channels for political parties and their leaders to communicate directly with the public.

The party said efforts to restore the account were ongoing as the compromised profile remained active and the messages announcing the takeover continued to be visible.
