Parents and pupils of Bungwanyi Government-Aided Primary School in Sironko District have received a major boost after four permanent classrooms were constructed and equipped following lobbying efforts by Sironko District Woman MP Asha Nabulo Lumolo Mafabi.
The new classrooms, built at a cost of more than Shs800 million, were commissioned on Monday, September 21, 2026, providing much-needed relief to the school, which had for years relied on dilapidated structures that posed a safety risk to learners and teachers.
The project was funded by Madina Masjid, a Muslim charity that responded to an appeal by Nabulo after she visited the school during the 2021 general election campaigns.
Nabulo said she was concerned by the condition of the classrooms at the time, with some buildings in such poor shape that they were considered at risk of collapsing.
She subsequently approached the charity and lobbied for support to construct permanent classrooms and provide desks for the school. After winning the Sironko District Woman MP seat in the 2026 general elections, Nabulo said she continued following up on the commitment until the project was implemented and completed.
The four classrooms have now been equipped with desks, creating a safer and more conducive learning environment for the school’s approximately 400 pupils from Primary One to Primary Seven.
Sironko District LCV Chairperson Nabende Guga commended the project, noting that Bungwanyi Primary School had never had permanent classroom structures since its establishment.
Guga said the district had previously planned to construct permanent classrooms but lacked adequate resources, adding that the initiative demonstrated the importance of leaders mobilising additional support for communities.
The school’s headteacher, Beatrice Nandundu, said the new classrooms had addressed a long-standing safety concern.
She said pupils were previously sometimes sent home early whenever it rained because school administrators feared that the old structures could collapse.
Nandundu, however, appealed to the district authorities to recruit more teachers, saying improved infrastructure could help the school attract and retain more pupils.
Parents also welcomed the intervention, with Sam Mutengo saying learners had previously been exposed to danger because of the poor condition of the classrooms.
Other parents, including Darah Nagudi and Suzan Negesa, called on teachers and pupils to use the improved learning environment to raise academic performance, particularly in the Primary Leaving Examinations.
The development marks a significant step in addressing Bungwanyi Primary School’s infrastructure challenges and reflects Nabulo’s efforts to mobilise external support for education in Sironko District.
