Police have released fresh details surrounding the death of Afrigo Band musician Matovu Moses, who died on Thursday, September 24, 2026, after sustaining serious injuries during an early-morning confrontation at Kibuli Depot in Makindye Division, Kampala.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Rachael Kawala, preliminary investigations indicate that Matovu went to the residence of his girlfriend at about 5:30 a.m. on Thursday.
Police said that as Matovu and the woman were leaving the residence, they were allegedly confronted by a male suspect who is believed to have previously been in a relationship with the same woman.
The confrontation reportedly escalated into a physical altercation, although police stressed that the exact circumstances leading to Matovu’s injuries and subsequent death have not yet been fully established.
Matovu sustained serious injuries during the incident and was rushed to Kibuli Hospital by a boda boda rider, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Police have since arrested the woman who was with Matovu at the time of the incident. She remains in custody and is assisting detectives as investigations continue.
The male suspect has reportedly been positively identified but is believed to have fled the scene following the incident. Police said their teams are actively pursuing him to facilitate his arrest and help investigators establish what exactly happened.
Kawala said detectives are continuing to verify the different accounts surrounding the incident before drawing conclusions on the circumstances that led to the musician’s death.
The police update comes as news of Matovu’s death continues to shock his fellow musicians, friends, family and fans, particularly within the Afrigo Band fraternity.
Police have appealed to the public to remain calm and allow investigators to carry out their work without interference as efforts continue to apprehend the wanted suspect.
Meanwhile, police have conveyed their condolences to Matovu’s family, friends, colleagues and fans as investigations into his death continue.
