Am Not Ready For That F**k Shit, Sorry Try Else Where: Tooro’s Kamurasi Desmond Reportedly Rejects Kingship

    By Swift Reporter

The succession of the Tooro Kingdom has taken an unexpected turn after George Kamurasi Desmond David, the royal reportedly selected to succeed the late King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, allegedly expressed reluctance to take up the throne.

The development, first reported by The Spy Uganda on Saturday, September 5, has cast fresh uncertainty over the kingdom’s succession process, coming just a day after the publication reported that Kamurasi had been selected by the Tooro Royal Succession Committee as the next Omukama.

According to sources cited by The Spy Uganda, Kamurasi was not informed beforehand that he was being considered for the throne and only learnt of his selection after the succession committee had reached its decision.

The reported selection followed a closed-door meeting held at Fort Motel in Fort Portal on Friday, September 4.

Of the 21 members involved in the succession process, 18 reportedly attended the final meeting, with Kamurasi said to have secured 15 votes. Musuuga Kamurasi also reportedly participated virtually, bringing the number of voters involved to 19.

However, the process has now reportedly encountered a major hurdle because Kamurasi was allegedly never consulted about whether he was willing to become king.

“Nobody told him he was coming to become king,” a source was quoted as saying.

    Return To Uganda

According to the report, Kamurasi’s return to Uganda was facilitated by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, but he was reportedly led to believe that he was coming home primarily to attend the burial of his cousin, King Oyo.

Sources claimed that the possibility of his selection was deliberately kept away from him during the period leading to the burial.

The reasoning, according to one source, was to avoid creating resentment among royal candidates who might be consulted in advance but eventually fail to secure the position.

The strategy, however, appears to have produced an unexpected complication if the royal chosen by the committee is unwilling to accept the throne.

Kamurasi, who is reportedly 36 years old, is understood to have established a family life in Britain, where he lives with his British wife and children.

Sources cited by The Spy Uganda claim that he would prefer to remain in the United Kingdom with his family rather than return permanently to Uganda to assume the demanding responsibilities associated with the Tooro monarchy.

    Football Career

Apart from his family life, Kamurasi is also reportedly interested in continuing his sporting career.

He has previously been profiled in Britain as a goalkeeper and is associated with non-league and Sunday League football.

His reported desire to continue playing football could therefore present another challenge to his possible installation as Omukama, a position that traditionally carries extensive cultural, social and public responsibilities.

The reported reluctance has consequently raised questions about whether the Babiito royal family will attempt to persuade Kamurasi to accept the throne or whether the succession process will have to identify another eligible royal.

    Questions Over Marriage

The controversy has also brought attention to Kamurasi’s marriage to his British wife.

Sources cited by The Spy Uganda claimed that concerns had emerged over the cultural expectations that could accompany his installation as king, including allegations that the institution could require the new monarch to take a Mutooro wife or alter his existing marital arrangements.

However, those claims have not been independently verified.

Neither Kamurasi nor his wife has publicly confirmed that concerns about marriage or cultural expectations influenced his reported reluctance to accept the throne.

The reported development has now triggered a broader cultural question: can a member of the Babiito royal family reject the kingship after being selected by the succession authorities?

A source familiar with the cultural arguments surrounding the succession told The Spy Uganda that traditionally, rejecting a throne entrusted to a royal is considered unacceptable.

“In the culture, he was not supposed to refuse. It is an abomination to reject the throne entrusted to you by the royal family,” the source was quoted as saying.

However, the cultural position does not by itself establish what would happen if Kamurasi formally declines the position.

The Babiito royal family and relevant cultural authorities may now be required to determine whether efforts can be made to convince him to accept the kingship or whether another royal should be considered.

For the moment, the reported rejection remains unconfirmed by Kamurasi himself or the official leadership of the Tooro Kingdom.
