Dr. Edwin Musiime, Chairman of the Uganda Homeowners Association, led a delegation of board members to honour business magnate Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia with the prestigious Lifetime Achievers Award at the National Property Awards held last week at Sheraton Hotel, Kampala.

The award celebrated Sudhir’s exceptional contribution to Uganda’s real estate industry and his pivotal role in improving access to affordable housing. The high-profile ceremony brought together government officials, business leaders, and key real estate stakeholders to celebrate innovation and excellence in the property sector.

“Dr. Sudhir has lived a life dedicated to bettering the standards of living for many Ugandans. Beyond affordable housing, he has invested heavily in education, healthcare, and recreation,” Dr. Musiime said in his keynote speech.

Sudhir, widely regarded as Uganda’s wealthiest businessman, has built an extensive real estate portfolio through Meera Investments and the Ruparelia Group. His landmark properties include Speke Resort Munyonyo, Kabira Country Club, Pearl Tower, Kingdom Kampala, and the upscale One-10 Apartments in Kololo, among others.

Beyond property, the Ruparelia Group has diversified into banking, hospitality, education, and agriculture, making it one of Uganda’s most influential business empires.

According to Forbes, Sudhir’s entrepreneurial journey began in the United Kingdom, where he saved $25,000 before returning to Uganda in 1985. He launched a beer distribution business in Kampala before gradually shifting to property development — a move that would eventually transform the city’s skyline.

Speaking at the ceremony, Hon. Judith Nabakooba, Minister of State for Lands, Housing and Urban Development, cautioned that Uganda faces a housing deficit of nearly seven million units. She called for greater collaboration between government and the private sector to provide affordable housing solutions for Ugandans.

Her sentiments were echoed by Mugabi Lazarus, Director of the Board of Governors at AREA Uganda, who urged households to keep accommodation expenses at no more than 30% of their income. He emphasized that housing shortages are a global challenge but stressed that targeted government intervention could bridge the gap locally.

Sudhir’s recognition extends beyond real estate. His investments in education, healthcare, and philanthropy have created thousands of jobs and significantly impacted Uganda’s socioeconomic landscape.

As Uganda continues to grapple with rapid urbanization and a growing housing deficit, the award underscores the vital role of private sector leaders like Dr. Sudhir Ruparelia in shaping the country’s future development.
