The Police Flying Squad Unit has shot and killed three suspected criminals in Kasenge Zone, Kyengera Town Council, Wakiso District, following what authorities described as an intelligence-led operation.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Rachel Kawala confirmed the incident on Monday evening, noting that one of the deceased was found with a forged Uganda Police warrant card numbered 38468. The card bore the name Moses Byaruhanga, presented as a Senior Traffic Sergeant allegedly recruited in 2016. Police also recovered a national ID belonging to Moses Kachingwa. The other two suspects—one of whom died upon arrival at Mulago National Referral Hospital—had not been identified by press time.
According to preliminary findings, the trio had reportedly been trailing a businesswoman. Security operatives had already been monitoring their movements after receiving intelligence indicating a planned criminal attack. “The suspects were found with a hammer, toy gun, knives, and housebreaking implements believed to have been used in a series of robberies targeting businesspeople. They trailed victims from Kampala to their homes,” Kawala said.
Despite the operation’s success, some local leaders expressed concern over the use of lethal force. Kyengera Town Council Mayor Mathias Walukaga and area chairperson Frank Mawejje questioned whether killing the suspects might jeopardize broader investigations. They argued that if the men were part of a larger criminal network, arresting them alive could have provided clues leading to more arrests.
Authorities say investigations into the Kyengera operation are ongoing, including verifying the suspects’ identities and assessing their possible links to other criminal activities.
