Former Speaker of Parliament and Bukedea Woman MP Anita Annet Among is expected to appear before the Anti-Corruption Court this afternoon in a major development in the high-profile corruption investigations that have dominated public attention in recent weeks.

Her anticipated arraignment follows a series of coordinated security operations conducted in May at properties linked to Among in Kampala and Wakiso districts. Joint teams of detectives and other security agencies searched several residences and impounded luxury vehicles as part of ongoing investigations into alleged corruption, illicit enrichment, abuse of office and money laundering.

Investigators have also been examining financial records, electronic devices and property acquisitions associated with the former Speaker as they seek to establish whether any laws were violated.

The investigations are understood to be linked to among others controversial “service awards” reportedly paid to Parliamentary Commissioners in 2022 and 2023. The payments, allegedly ranging between Shs1.4 billion and Shs1.7 billion per beneficiary, attracted widespread public criticism after they were approved internally by Parliament.

Authorities are investigating whether the awards and related financial transactions breached Uganda’s anti-corruption laws.

The probe has also drawn international attention. In 2024, the governments of the United Kingdom and the United States imposed sanctions on Among over allegations of significant corruption, including travel restrictions and asset freezes under their respective anti-corruption frameworks.

The investigations and subsequent security raids have generated significant political and public interest, with reports suggesting that some of Among’s former political allies distanced themselves as the probe intensified. Analysts have described the case as one of the most significant anti-corruption actions involving a senior Ugandan political figure in recent years.

By the time of publication, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions had not officially disclosed the specific charges that Among is expected to face before the Anti-Corruption Court. The court proceedings are expected to provide greater clarity on the allegations and the prosecution’s case.
