The debate and feud surrounding the succession of the Tooro Kingdom throne have taken a major turn after Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba confirmed His Majesty Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I as the new Omukama of Tooro.
In a message posted on social media, Gen Muhoozi declared that Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I is the new king of Tooro, appearing to bring further clarity to the succession question that has dominated public debate in recent days.
“My fellow Ugandans, the new Omukama of Tooro is His Majesty Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I. Long may he reign. God bless him always. God bless Tooro,” Muhoozi tweeted.
The statement comes at a time when the Tooro Kingdom has been facing intense discussions over who should succeed the late Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who died recently after a period of illness.
Gen Muhoozi’s public declaration is therefore significant because it places his authority behind Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I at a moment when the kingdom has been seeking clarity and unity over its next monarch.
The development also follows recent moves by Tooro clan leaders and other cultural stakeholders to participate in the succession process. The Orukurato Orwe’nsanju, the meeting of Tooro clan leaders, has also backed the declaration of Edward as the new king, further strengthening his claim to the throne.
The succession of a new Omukama is a major cultural moment for the people of Tooro, a kingdom with a long-standing history and deep traditional institutions.
The late King Oyo, who became Omukama at a very young age following the death of his father, Omukama Patrick Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III, went on to reign for more than three decades. His death created the need for the kingdom to begin a new chapter under a successor.
With Gen Muhoozi now publicly referring to Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I as the new Omukama, attention is expected to shift towards the formal cultural and traditional processes surrounding his installation and the consolidation of the kingdom under the new reign.
For many Batooro, the latest development represents an opportunity to move beyond the succession disagreements and focus on unity, stability and the future of the kingdom.
As the new chapter begins, Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I is now at the centre of Tooro’s royal institution, with expectations that his reign will preserve the kingdom’s cultural heritage while providing renewed leadership for the people of Tooro.
“Long may he reign,” Muhoozi said, as he concluded his message with a blessing for the new king and the Kingdom of Tooro.
