At least six people have been confirmed dead and several others injured following a tragic road crash involving a Nile Star bus and a trailer in Nwoya District. The accident occurred at around 2:00am at Purongo Town Council along the Pakwach–Olwiyo–Karuma Highway, when the bus, registration number UBP 736U, collided with a trailer lorry transporting fish.

According to Nwoya LC5 Chairperson Emmanuel Orach, the incident was gruesome, with multiple victims rushed to Anaka General Hospital for emergency treatment. Some of the injured are expected to be referred to St Mary’s Hospital Lacor in Gulu City for specialized care. Nwoya Resident District Commissioner Christopher Omara confirmed that by Monday morning, six fatalities had been recorded, alongside 14 hospital admissions, attributing the crash to reckless driving.

However, a manager from Nile Star Bus, speaking anonymously, gave a slightly different account, stating that four people died on the spot while 13 others were injured and taken to Kiryandongo Hospital. The manager added that the remaining passengers continued their journey to Kampala using an alternative bus arranged by the company. The bus was reportedly carrying 67 passengers from Arua at the time of the incident.

Police Spokesperson for Aswa West, David Ongom Mudong, confirmed the incident but noted that details were still emerging as investigations continue. Authorities say more updates will be provided as efforts to establish the exact cause of the crash and identify the victims progress.
