A fresh war of words has erupted between Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba and veteran government spokesperson Ofwono Opondo, after the army chief publicly challenged the latter to apologise within seven days or face a dramatic confrontation at his preferred burial ground in Tororo.
The exchange, which has attracted attention because of the verbal missilers used by the two sides, began when Muhoozi took to X (formerly Twitter), noting that he had heard Opondo had a death wish.
“I hear Ofwono Opondo has a death wish. I’m giving him exactly 7 days to apologize on his knees to me,” Muhoozi posted.
However, instead of backing down, Opondo responded with a remark that appeared to turn the ultimatum into an extraordinary invitation, naming Mulanda-Ayago in Tororo as his preferred burial ground.
“I have not made my death wish, but if this is accurate, the 7th day will find me in Mulanda-Ayago, my preferred burial ground. Mr President,” Opondo replied.
Muhoozi subsequently accepted the challenge, declaring that he would be willing to meet Opondo at the location.
“I will happily oblige. Let’s meet there. I have never said anything about O.O. in my life yet he continuously attacks us. He will learn we can defend ourselves,” Muhoozi wrote.
The CDF went further, drawing parallels between Opondo and former army officer Gen Peter Elwelu, whose recent arrest and the allegations surrounding him have generated considerable public attention.
“He is walking in the footsteps of Elweru. He will learn too. Musibegye,” Muhoozi added.
In another post, Muhoozi said that Opondo had fled the country, warning that security authorities would be waiting for him when he attempted to return.
“I hear O.O. has fled the country. We shall be waiting for him when he attempts to return,” he wrote.
Muhoozi also referred to the basement, an apparent reference to Opondo’s previous remarks about it, suggesting that the government spokesperson would receive what he described as warm-up exercises there.
“O.O. has been talking about the basement. We shall give him some warm-up exercises in the basement. Since he loves it so much,” Muhoozi posted.
The exchange has raised questions about the nature of the disagreement between the two prominent figures, particularly given Muhoozi’s position as Uganda’s top military commander and Opondo’s long-standing role in government communications.
Whether Opondo will respond further to Muhoozi’s seven-day ultimatum remains to be seen. For now, the public is watching closely as the extraordinary exchange unfolds.
