Journalist and political commentator Andrew Mwenda has claimed that retired senior military officer Peter Elwelu was allegedly planning to assassinate Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba as part of a plot to take over Uganda.
In a post on X, Mwenda alleged that individuals recruited into a militia linked to Elwelu had told investigators that the former officer intended to kill Muhoozi to pave the way for his takeover of the country.
“Private Elwelu was planning to kill the CDF @mkainerugaba. The militia he had recruited have said that in a briefing to them, he said he kills Gen Muhoozi he would be able to take over Uganda. Now he is hiding in the swamps of Teso,” Mwenda wrote.
The latest allegation adds to the growing controversy surrounding Elwelu, a retired senior military officer who has recently come under scrutiny following statements by the army chief about an alleged rebellion plot.
Muhoozi earlier announced the arrest of more than 20 former soldiers allegedly associated with Elwelu, saying they were cooperating with investigators. He also announced that Elwelu had been stripped of his military ranks and demoted to Private.
The CDF further claimed that security forces had recovered firearms and ammunition from one of Elwelu’s homes in the Teso sub-region.
Mwenda’s latest remarks suggest that the alleged plot may have targeted the country’s top military commander, although the claims in his post have not been independently verified.
It remains unclear whether the relevant security agencies have formally confirmed the alleged assassination plan or provided details about Elwelu’s whereabouts.
Further clarification from the authorities is expected as investigations into the alleged plot continue.
