Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has announced the release of retired Brig Gen Charles Bakahumura from detention, signalling a possible move to mend strained relationships within the senior ranks of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF).
In a post on his official X account on Saturday, October 31, 2026, Gen Muhoozi said he had decided to release the former head of the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI), adding that efforts would be made to restore relationships that had deteriorated in the past.
“I have decided to release General Bakahumura from detention today. We shall repair the relations that were broken in the past,” Muhoozi posted.
Bakahumura’s detention was reportedly linked to a wider military investigation into alleged treachery and false intelligence involving serving and retired military officers.
The retired general was reportedly arrested alongside former CMI chief Maj Gen Abel Kandiho as part of the inquiry sanctioned by the CDF.
Bakahumura previously headed CMI, now restructured as Defence Intelligence and Security (DIS), between 2012 and 2017. After leaving the intelligence position, he was appointed Chief of Logistics and Engineering, where he served for approximately seven years.
His detention came amid heightened tensions following the retirement of 19 generals at a ceremony presided over by President Yoweri Museveni at State House Entebbe on August 20, 2026.
The CDF had earlier criticised videos showing some of the retired generals dancing during celebrations surrounding their retirement, warning that those involved would face investigations and possible arrest.
“I think from now it’s forbidden for generals to dance too much next to State House. We are investigating all the generals who were dancing too much. They will be arrested soon,” Muhoozi wrote in one of his earlier posts.
In another message, he described the celebrations as “NONSENSE” and questioned why the officers appeared happy to be leaving the UPDF.
Muhoozi, then indicated that security operations targeting some of the retired officers were continuing, claiming that one of the generals he had referred to as a “dancing General” had been captured, with another expected to follow.
Muhoozi’s announcement regarding Bakahumura marks a significant development in the unfolding military investigation, although the circumstances surrounding the retired general’s detention and the specific allegations against him have not been fully detailed publicly.
