The East African region today comprises eight member states of the East African Community (EAC): Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Somalia. Beyond the EAC, countries such as Ethiopia are also geographically part of East Africa and play a significant role in the region’s political and economic landscape.
Many people assume presidents across East Africa receive enormous government paychecks. While some indeed earn substantial monthly salaries, others officially take home surprisingly modest amounts despite presiding over multi-billion-dollar economies.
It is also important to distinguish official government salary from personal net worth. A president’s salary is what they legally earn from the state, while net worth reflects the total value of personal assets, businesses, investments, land and other holdings accumulated over many years.
Below is a look at both the official monthly salaries and estimated personal wealth of some of East Africa’s leaders.

Although Kenya’s President William Ruto receives the highest official monthly salary in the region, government pay is only one component of a leader’s financial profile.
Several East African presidents have accumulated significant wealth over decades through commercial farming, real estate, investments and other private business interests.
William Ruto (Kenya)

According to publicly available estimates, Ruto has amassed considerable wealth through extensive poultry farming, hospitality investments, real estate and shareholdings in various companies. Combined with the region’s highest presidential salary, he remains among East Africa’s wealthiest leaders.
Paul Kagame (Rwanda)
Estimated Net Worth: Approximately $500 million
Despite earning an official salary estimated at around $7,000 per month, Kagame is widely reported to possess one of the largest fortunes among African leaders. Various estimates attribute this wealth to investments, commercial holdings and businesses linked to Rwanda’s ruling establishment.
Yoweri Museveni (Uganda)
Estimated Net Worth: Approximately $200 million
On paper, Museveni earns one of the lowest official salaries among East African presidents—less than $1,000 per month. However, estimates place his wealth much higher, largely attributed to commercial agriculture, livestock ranching, family-owned farms and long-standing private business interests accumulated during his decades in power.
