A photograph circulating on social media has intensified public concern over the health of former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among, appearing to confirm reports that she is battling a serious medical condition.
The image, which was shared on X, formerly Twitter, shows Among visibly frail, with both feet heavily bandaged and receiving intravenous treatment in what appears to be a home setting. The photograph has triggered widespread discussion, drawing sympathy from supporters and reigniting debate over her access to medical care amid ongoing legal and political troubles.
The development comes days after reports emerged alleging that the former Speaker was suffering from a blood clot that had significantly affected her mobility. At the time, the claims had not been independently verified by official sources. However, the leaked image has added weight to growing concerns about her condition, although no official medical statement has been released by Among, her family, or her representatives.
Questions surrounding Among’s health first gained public attention after former Kampala Central MP Muhammad Nsereko claimed that she was critically ill and unable to walk.
Speaking during a live TikTok broadcast on June 22, Nsereko said he had recently visited the former Speaker and found her in distress.
“It is terrible what I have seen. The legs are all swollen. What happened to compassion in the world?” Nsereko said, while appealing for authorities to allow her access to specialized treatment.
He further alleged that Among was suffering from deep vein thrombosis, commonly known as a blood clot, and questioned why she had not been permitted to seek comprehensive medical care.
His remarks quickly spread across social media platforms, prompting a wave of reactions from both supporters and critics of the former Speaker.
Among has remained largely out of public view in recent months as investigations into allegations of corruption, abuse of office, illicit enrichment and money laundering continue.
She is reportedly under scrutiny by both the Inspectorate of Government (IGG) and the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID). Her legal troubles intensified following a presidential directive that reportedly prompted coordinated security operations targeting several of her properties in Nakasero, Kigo, Ntinda and her home district of Bukedea.
Reports indicate that she has since remained confined to her Nakasero residence under tight security surveillance, although authorities have not publicly commented on restrictions relating to her movements or access to healthcare.
Parliament has also remained silent regarding the former Speaker’s reported health condition despite growing public interest in the matter.
As concern over Among’s wellbeing grows, leaders from her home district have begun speaking publicly about her condition.
Bukedea County MP David Beecham Okwere has appealed to government authorities to allow the former Speaker access to her doctors if specialized treatment is required.
Speaking to Okwere revealed that he visited Among at her Nakasero residence last week and observed swelling in her feet. However, he dismissed claims that she was in critical condition.
According to Okwere, Among was able to move around within her compound during his visit, although he acknowledged concerns regarding her health and the need for proper medical attention.
“I cannot determine whether the swelling is linked to blood clotting as alleged,” Okwere said, adding that only qualified medical professionals could establish the exact nature of her condition.
Kumi Municipality MP Silas Ogon also weighed in on the matter, noting that Among remains a serving Member of Parliament and is therefore entitled to parliamentary medical benefits.
“She has just started a new term of office. Her office is not vacant. She is still a Member of Parliament and entitled to medical attention paid for by Parliament,” Ogon said.
He suggested that the issue may not be the availability of funds for treatment but rather her ability to freely access medical services.
The reports have generated intense debate across social media, exposing sharply divided opinions about the former Speaker.
Many Ugandans have expressed sympathy and called for compassion regardless of political differences. Supporters have urged authorities to facilitate access to treatment, arguing that healthcare is a fundamental human right.
Several commentators noted that serious illness should never become a political issue and appealed for humanity in handling the situation.
Others, however, pointed to controversies that surrounded Among’s tenure as Speaker and questioned why some leaders who previously ignored similar appeals from political opponents are now demanding compassion.
The debate has also revived broader conversations about Uganda’s healthcare system, with some citizens questioning why senior government officials often seek treatment abroad whenever they face serious health challenges.
Political analyst and philosopher Jim Spire Ssentongo was among those who argued that leaders should demonstrate confidence in public health institutions by utilizing facilities available within the country.
Others countered that every Ugandan, regardless of status, should have access to the best medical care available whenever necessary.
Beyond the immediate concerns surrounding Among’s health, the unfolding situation has sparked wider discussions about life after political power, the emotional toll of public scrutiny and the importance of support systems for leaders facing personal crises.
Mental health professionals note that abrupt transitions from positions of influence can be emotionally demanding, particularly when accompanied by legal challenges, public criticism and declining health.
Counsellors argue that strong family networks, trusted friendships and professional support often play a critical role in helping public figures navigate difficult periods in their lives.
Medical experts have also cautioned against drawing conclusions from social media photographs alone, emphasizing that swelling of the legs can result from numerous medical conditions and that any diagnosis should be left to qualified healthcare professionals following proper examination.
Despite mounting speculation, no official statement has been issued by Among, her family, medical team or legal representatives regarding her health status.
As a result, many claims circulating online remain unverified.
What is clear, however, is that the leaked photograph has transformed what was previously social media speculation into a matter of national discussion, raising questions about healthcare access, political compassion and the treatment of former leaders facing personal and legal challenges.
For now, supporters and critics alike await official clarification on the former Speaker’s condition, while calls continue to grow for transparency and access to appropriate medical care.
