A new study by market research firm GitNux has revealed the average hip sizes of women across 17 countries, offering insight into which nations have the most curvaceous figures.
1. South Africa – 41.73 inches
Sweden’s third-place ranking at 40.9 inches is one of the most surprising results, especially considering the stereotype of Swedish women as tall and slender. However, increased nutritional diversity, fitness culture, and changing beauty ideals may contribute to a growing number of women with hourglass figures.
Greek women have an average hip size of 40.74 inches. Genetics plays a strong role here, as Mediterranean populations often carry pear-shaped body types, with fuller hips and thighs. The traditional Mediterranean diet, rich in healthy fats, also supports natural body development over time.
5. Germany – 40.6 inches
With an average of 40.6 inches, German women show that curviness is not limited to Southern regions. Germany has moderate obesity rates and high-calorie diets, which may contribute to fuller figures. Furthermore, modern European fashion trends are increasingly celebrating body diversity and curves.
6. United States – 40.2 inches
At 40.2 inches, the U.S. ranks sixth. American women are often associated with a wide range of body types due to the country’s ethnic diversity. The popularity of BBLs, high-protein diets, and fitness routines focused on glutes (like squats and deadlifts) has also contributed to this average.
7. Russia – 40.55 inches
Russian women have an average hip size of 40.55 inches. This may be attributed to genetics and cultural standards that emphasise strong, feminine figures. In Russia, there’s a deep-rooted emphasis on physical appearance, and many women maintain curves through a combination of diet, targeted workouts, and even plastic surgery. A growing wellness industry and beauty culture may also contribute to this average.

8. Italy – 40.55 inches
10. Netherlands – 40 inches
The Netherlands rounds out the top 10 with an average hip size of 40 inches. Dutch women are typically tall, and while their frames may be slim, recent trends in fitness and changing diets could explain the rise in average hip size.
Surprisingly, Nigeria ranks 13th with an average hip size of 38.56 inches. While African women are globally known for their full figures, this lower-than-expected ranking could reflect urban dietary changes, shifts in physical activity levels, and regional diversity within the country that averages out extreme figures.
So, What Determines Butt Size?
While the study doesn’t directly state the causes behind each country’s ranking, researchers suggest several contributing factors:
- National obesity rates
- Trends in plastic surgery (like BBLs)
- Genetic bone structure
- Cultural beauty standards
- Diet and lifestyle
These complex and overlapping factors influence the shape and size of women’s bodies around the world.
