Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has announced the arrest of more than 20 former soldiers associated with Brig Gen (Rtd) Peter Elweru, saying they are cooperating with investigators as he called on the former military officer to surrender.
In a series of posts on X, Muhoozi described Elweru as a traitor and announced that he had been stripped of his military ranks and demoted to the rank of Private.
“We have arrested over 20 of Elweru’s former soldiers. They are co-operating well. They all agree he went insane a long time ago. Elweru should SURRENDER soon in order to save his own life,” Muhoozi wrote.
In a separate post, the army chief declared: “The traitor Peter Elweru is hereby stripped of his ranks. He is demoted to Private.”
Muhoozi did not provide details about the circumstances surrounding the reported arrests or specify the allegations against the former soldiers.
The statements signal an escalation in the public dispute involving Elweru, a former senior military officer who also served in Parliament.
In another post, Muhoozi said that Elweru’s wife had been arrested over alleged domestic abuse, accusing her of physically mistreating him for eight years.
“We have also arrested Elweru’s wife who has been beating him for the last 8 years. That’s why he always looked confused in Parliament. Domestic abuse,” Muhoozi stated.
He did not provide further details about the arrest, the circumstances surrounding it or whether formal charges had been filed against Elweru’s wife.
