Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has said that security forces recovered a substantial quantity of firearms and ammunition from a home belonging to former senior military officer Peter Elweru in Teso, as he issued a fresh ultimatum for him to surrender.
In a post on X, Muhoozi shared what he described as some of the weapons allegedly stockpiled by Elweru at one of his homes in the eastern Ugandan sub-region.
“Some of the arms ‘Private Elweru’ was stockpiling at one of his homes in Teso. We have recovered a lot of arms and ammunition from his house,” Muhoozi wrote.
The army chief said Elweru had only hours to surrender, warning that the military would declare him a rebel if he failed to comply.
“He has hours to surrender before we declare him a rebel and deal with him accordingly,” Muhoozi added.
In earlier posts, Muhoozi announced the arrest of more than 20 former soldiers associated with Elweru, saying they were cooperating with investigators. He also declared that Elweru had been stripped of his military ranks and demoted to Private.
Muhoozi further said that Elweru’s wife had been arrested over claims of domestic abuse.
The developments remain based on statements made publicly by the army chief, with further details about the reported weapons recovery and the status of the investigation yet to emerge.
