Journalist and political commentator Andrew Mwenda has accused former senior military officer, Peter Elwelu of allegedly using Christian fundamentalism to disguise plans for a rebellion against the Ugandan state.
In a post on X, Mwenda weighed in on the unfolding controversy surrounding Elwelu, following statements by Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba that security forces had recovered firearms and ammunition from one of the former officer’s homes in Teso.
“Private Elwelu had been hiding behind Christian fundamentalism to disguise his plans for a rebellion against the state. Now he is on the run, and Christ won’t protect him from his plots to violently destabilize Uganda,” Mwenda wrote.
Mwenda’s remarks add a new dimension to the growing public debate surrounding Elwelu, who has recently come under scrutiny following a series of statements by the army chief.
Muhoozi previously announced the arrest of more than 20 former soldiers associated with Elwelu, noting that they were cooperating with investigators. He also declared that the retired general had been stripped of his military ranks and demoted to Private.
Further information from the relevant authorities is expected to clarify the circumstances surrounding the unfolding matter.
