Two people have died and property has been damaged following heavy rains that pounded parts of the Kampala Metropolitan Area on October 11, 2026, with police warning residents to exercise caution amid the dangers posed by flooding and collapsing structures.
The victims died in separate incidents in Bulabira Zone and Ttuba Zone, as floodwaters swept through some areas and heavy rainfall reportedly weakened structures, according to police.
In Bulabira Zone, police recovered the body of an unidentified man, estimated to be between 22 and 28 years old, from a drainage trench. Preliminary information indicates that he may have been swept to the location by floodwater.
The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, and police have called on anyone whose relative is missing and matches the man’s description to contact Najjera Police Station for assistance in identification.
In a separate incident in Ttuba Zone, Kyanja Parish, 25-year-old Jalia Nameere died after a perimeter wall reportedly collapsed onto her rented room during the overnight downpour.
Her death highlights the dangers heavy rains can pose to residents living near potentially unstable walls and structures, particularly when prolonged rainfall weakens foundations or surrounding ground.
Police said both bodies were conveyed to the mortuary for postmortem examinations as investigations into the incidents continue.
The downpour also left a trail of property damage in other parts of the metropolitan area.
In Kiganda Zone, Kireka, police recovered a red TVS motorcycle bearing registration number UFG 529A from floodwater. The circumstances surrounding how the motorcycle ended up in the water were not immediately established.
In Mbalwa, floodwater destroyed a perimeter wall belonging to Mark Lwanga and damaged his Toyota Sienta, registration number UBH 630P.
Police officers visited the affected locations, documented the scenes and commenced inquiries into the incidents.
The latest incidents underscore the recurring risks associated with heavy rainfall in urban communities, where flooded drainage channels, waterlogged roads and vulnerable structures can threaten lives and property.
Police have urged members of the public to avoid flooded roads, drainage channels and trenches, warning against walking or driving through fast-flowing water, whose depth and strength can be difficult to judge.
Residents have also been advised to keep away from unstable walls and buildings, especially during periods of prolonged or heavy rainfall.
Property owners are encouraged to inspect their buildings and perimeter walls for cracks, leaning sections and other signs of structural weakness, and to address potential dangers before they result in injuries or loss of life.
As investigations continue, police are appealing for public cooperation, particularly from families searching for missing relatives who may match the description of the unidentified man recovered in Bulabira.
The two deaths serve as a grim reminder of the need for vigilance during the rainy season, when flooding and structural failures can turn ordinary journeys and residential spaces into dangerous environments.
